Welcome to our Family Bushcraft Channel!
My name is Nick Goldsmith and together with my wife Louise, our son Finley and fox red Labrador Tilly, we aim to inspire you to have your own family adventures in the great outdoors.
We focus on wilderness living skills, traditional crafts, and are strong advocates of using nature to improve mental well-being.
In 2014 I was diagnosed with complex PTSD after a busy career as a British Royal Marine Commando. I now use the outdoors to manage my condition.
I am a full time Bushcraft Instructor, Ethnobotanist and outdoor chef and Louise is a qualified Forest School Leader.
Together we run Hidden Valley Bushcraft and The Woodland Warrior Programme from our private woodland in the South West of England.
We will be offering survival and foraging tips, family bushcraft activities and kit reviews as well as a variety of useful videos to help with your mental well-being.
We hope you enjoy,
Nick, Louise, Finley and Tilly.

The hogweed is a real nasty plant, it’s the burn that keeps giving
Ive heard many people ask which plants are poisenous. My answer is always; "About 90% of what grows in your garden". And thats the truth. Not all equally poisenous of course, but poisenous none the less. From the 10 mentioned here, i have 4 for sure, probably 5 in my garden (in NL.. im dutch): Aconite, which the wind blew in some 20 years ago. It always grows back and i let it grow and flower, but it doesnt spread out much, if at all (its a bit of a rare plant). I told my children not to touch it. Digitalis aswell, which i seeded myself some 35 years ago. Seed taken from the wild, but its common here and a nice and pretty plant (same as Aconite, but this is seasonal mostly). Also easy to maintain. Euphorbia; which is so common, it grows everywhere. They can easily be pulled out when young, but still always manage to seed and theres 100s at least popping up every year. They all produce white 'milk'. My late uncle, who was a police detective, was also interested in all plant and animal life and put some of the sap on his tongue once. It tasted bitter he said and his tongue swell up a lot. Atropa. As all nightshade, poisenous, including popatoes; of which the green parts (and berries) are. When your popatoes get light on them, the peel can get green, extending inwards to the popatoe. Thats poisenous and the reason they need to be kept in the dark and the green bits cut off. Wild varieties of Atropa are common in gardens and same as potatoes, produce black berries. Also poisenous. Jacobaea. Not sure if its in my garden, but probably is. The deadlyness is a bit exagerated here. Of course, when eating it, you will be in big trouble, but its not so bad that when you just touch it that you are in trouble. I dont use gloves in the garden and just regularly touch, or pull out and get sap on me, including from Euphorbia. Nothing bad ever happened to me wrt this. A lot of this has to do with the chemicals penetrating through, or absorbed by the skin. If it can get in that way, like the first few mentioned, i do use gloves. Those were actively sought and destroyed here. Well that was 30+ years ago. Dont know if that is still the case, but i think they stil do. So even though 90% of what grows in your garden, is poisenous, it is on a scale from very dangerous to just annoying, maybe irritating a bit. And the amount you get in is of course, also always a factor. Better be safe though, not sorry.
Thanks for the great video. FYI racing bike inner tube will fit snugly on the outside of the tube. Then you can wrap the strike paper within the plastic cage at the top. Raid your partners beauty kit and slip a nail file down in with the matches for something a little more sturdy.
Yew berries are worth a mention- they taste sweet but the seeds and leaves are very toxic
You don't need to worry about your talking to the camera. It feels quite natural to listen to you.
Awesome
GRACIAS POR TAN INTERESANTE VIDEO.
Thank you very much for sharing this,🌱as a forager, i I'm hoping you don't mind me pointing out that was Woody Nightshade, and not Belladonna. Oh, and Lord's and Ladies is like a Mouthful of Paper cuts!! Aged almost 60, I still Blister up from the Giant Hogweed, that I touched as a Teenager, before any Information about it was available!! Dog's Mercury is quite innocuous looking, and deserves a video of it's own, in order to identify it better. Really I Can't Thank you enough for this video!! ~As God only knows how I managed to get to my age, growing up during the 60/70s,there wasnt readily available information about Foraging. ( Unless you were lucky enough to have a knowledgeable Nanna!)
Touching hemlock gave me blisters even on the palms of my hands & feet lasting months
Belladonna is used in homeopathic medicines.
What do you water proof your tarps with?
Got a short but full list of parts for a beginner like me? Size of cord? 1 person tarp 5'8" tall. Thank you.
Great channel 👋🇸🇪👍🏻😃 I ve start to wax my cotton canvas shirts and bags into waterproof hiking gear and outfits. Perfekt in Swedish woods
Good lord, what a piece of poetry. All the more poignant given the author is composing from hard won experience. I like many others look forward to seeing your work again.
MARINE MY ASS!!!
Thanks this is ĺife saving knowledge 👍 Here in B.C. Canada we have all sorts of stuff😊Cheers
I like “stories” when learning things, whether knots or memorising a deck of cards… good vid, thank you
Once again I have shared this to Facebook Groups..
Very impressive! I’d eat that. I must admit that heat looked a tad ferocious when you placed the mug into it, and I did think the bottom of the loaf would burn, but as you say. Out in the woods! Get it down your neck! No one learned anything without making mistakes. Thanks for a great fun vid.
The monkshood/aconitum leaves look so much like creeping buttercup, so I dont know whether I could tell them apart, except perhaps the creeping buttercup has a low habit, whilst the monkshood apparently an erect plant ?
I have the same sleeping bag. I don't understand how you would dry out socks though? Wouldn't they just get you wet
a TIP for No 1 Tarp layout would be made a little better with a top shelf over hang, which could help shed any precipitation away from you.
“Not TOO many widow makers.” 😂🤔
Having planted a broadleaf woodland in 2017 which is now maturing beautifully we’ve got lots of Hogweed growing and I’m having great difficulty in identifying it with the giant hogweed. I’ll be watching closely as to how big it grows as I’m unsure looking at the stems. Am I right in thinking that the giant hogweed has purple coloured spots?
I always found feather sticks to be a bit time consuming and high effort. I simply make wood shavings and collect them in my jacket for fire starting from the timber I could make feather sticks from. I don't really see the advantage of feather sticks but maybe you can explain?
We have lots of foxglove in the US
Get on with it!
Thanks dude, so helpful while wrestling a 9*6 tarp 6 metres up.
Scots word for pockets is pooches In Aberdeenshire ‘Buchan Doric”
Got omething similar, only cost me £20 and brilliant if caught in the rain. i havent added cordage yet but you can bet im gonna do this
Scraping the carbon off that bread probably done more damage to the blade than the can 😂
Rather than cutting something off, wouldn’t it be better (for the tree) to scrape the bark to see if it’s fat wood?
The ragwort at the end looks more like rough hawk’s-beard, crepis biennis, as much too wirey for ragwort.
What a great piece of kit. I like the idea of having it centered on my base town as I live on the cusp of two OS maps which is really annoying. Bet it's a few quid though, but if you include a £20 map case I guess it would balance out.
isaw a garden rescue episode once. the family wanted their kids to be involved gardening and growing edible, so tha's was cool, they planted all sorts of berries, can't remember, but them they made a hedge of taxus around it with pretty red berries once a year and well a 2 year old doesn't know the difference i reckon
as kids we used to pick foxglove flowers and wear them on our fingers 😊
Thank you for another amazing video and helpful information my current bag I use is a DPM IRR / SEYNTEX 1999 bargain 90L but looking for something which has 60l with additional pockets on the outside as I like to take my Army winter sleeping bag drawing Autumn and Winter
Not sure if folk still read these, but thank you Nick. It is not so much the hypervigilance that has stopped me staying out overnight, but the fear of not wanting to come back in to the world. But, my sister has a small patch of land that she calls a garden and I shall be going to north wales this weekend with my tarp and hammock to sleep out in her garden so that I dont lose contact with my real life. You’ve been an inspiration
Sounds lovely. Take care of yourself
Nice. I use stones on my spoons😊
Good luck on your future path😊 Take care.
All great but i feel this content is dated, the rucsac is top notch granted - but this kits is weighted G10 standard issue- as weight is a major condideration, maybe lighter ancillaries would be of some use. No weight on back means no weight on the knees. After living in a tent and out of a rucsac for a year i pretty much got my necesities down too fluid, food, clean/dry feet and sleeping dry, warm & comfy...to a tee, seen many a man dump kit to reduce weight - besides this, the video is very good.
Thames Water are a poisonous Plant.
I did exactly what you preach the very first time I entered the "woods". After getting out of that bush, I immediately created a fool proof method of never ever getting lost in the bush. I said to myself: "Don't you ever dare do that again !!!" And so I never went back to that bush ! However, I created navigation systems years later, sun, magnetic many types of compass, BUT THAT BUSH WALK STILL HAUNTS ME and I will stay out of it. I try to listen to people like you and those that go to the Amazon jungle, for a fool proof method, or atleast a guaranteed escape plan like having a homing pigeon in my rucksack !
digitalis is called vingerhoedskruid in Dutch, we also have white flowered ones...
1:29 its NOT an attack its merely change in terrain fungus grows wherever its needed. fungus doesnt attack a dead carcass it shows up because its dead.
Yep. "Upper spending limit, sensibly." About $50.00 Let's not go crazy. Mora Black rocks.
natural defense system very nice this guy knows how plants work, none of the other videos i saw about fatwood talked about this turpentine is a toxin/anti nutrient it even burns your palm. awesome botany information in this video thank you HVB. Subscribed.
Great Video and Channel! Any possibility of maybe doing a product review of our Firestarter?
A great tutorial for a beginner like me. I subscribed because you used Fan Dabby Dozy. I'm putting together a fishing and hunting display for a living history group that I'm part of. Learning about making cordage for fishing nets brought me here. It looks like it'll be a fairly small fishing net.
It's a nice little knife, in fact if it's all you had you'd be doing alright
